Spring of 2018 Started like most other years. We started by removing one or two types of trees from cold storage and started heating the greenhouse to get them to grow.
We finished building a pump house with a water tank and a solar panel and purchased a new transfer pump to move water from our pond to the tanks at the pump house and the green house. We installed drip lines to water the trees that we had planted last fall.
We opened for business and before long it seemed that if it wasn’t blazing hot it was pouring rain. Since we typically show people our tree as they are in the ground, not having nice weather was a problem.
By the end of the summer we had sold almost enough trees to pay for the additions we had made in the spring. We planted 150 trees in Rootmaker bags and 100 trees in Grounder pots
We added five new trees that will be available in 3 to 4 years, they are Sycamore, Silver Maple, Ginkgo, Hop Hornbeam, and Eastern Red Cedar.
We have some more variety in the seeds gathered last fall if we can get them to propagate. Big trees sometimes have very small seeds or seeds that need special processing before they will sprout.
This year we added more varieties of trees, including:
- Ginkgo Biloba
- Silver Maple
- Eastern Red Cedar
- Hop Hornbeam
These new trees should be ready to sell in 2021.
